60,000-Liter Oil Spill in Battambang Under Recovery

Oil droplet barriers are being installed in Toul Ta Ek village, Toul Ta Ek commune, and Battambang city to clean up the oil spill from approximately 60,000 of the 70,000 liters of fuel and assess the impact on the environment. After Minister of the Environment Eang Sophallet led a team to inspect the scene on Sunday, August 17, the spilled oil was evaluated and cleaned up.

The water supply system had been affected by the spilled oil about 500 meters away, according to the inspection. The Minister urged the team to conduct a detailed environmental impact assessment to examine and resolve environmental damage and ensure local cleanliness, especially the well-being of citizens and the environment, good health, and sustainable development.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the Minister gave the expert team of the Ministry of Environment instructions to work with authorities and company representatives to prepare measures to stop the oil from spreading to other locations.

These measures included installing oil droplet barriers at three key locations along the storm drains, performing routine cleaning to prevent leakage into the sewer system and public water areas, and cleaning the water drainage system that was affected.

The train had four oil tanks, each holding 36,000 liters of diesel. However, the public was able to collect approximately 10,000 liters of the approximately 70,000 liters of oil that had leaked. According to the Ministry of Environment, some of the oil that leaked also entered storm drains 500 meters from the leak site and into a pit on the other side of the railway track.

The minister gave the team the order to clean the drains and collect oil droplet samples from the drain soil using machinery for the benefit of the locals. He also asked the authorities to help people who lived near the scene keep their homes clean, dispose of garbage properly, and avoid using oil waste that had been spilled.

Instead, they ought to gather it and store it so that the authorities can transport it to an appropriately technological incinerator for burning.
